Can I find more information regarding maintenance, directions or repairs for wheels, hubs and components?
Please see the HELP tab on this website for information regarding maintenance, directions or repairs. Information on hub bearings and cassette bodies are on the HELP tab under hub sets.
Why are wheels bought on online auctions, such as eBay, not warrantied?
All people selling American Classic products on online auctions like eBay are not authorized American Classic dealers. American Classic does not know where wheels sold on online auctions originate, whether they are in fact American Classic wheels, and therefore we cannot guarantee their quality and warranty them.
What technology makes American Classic hubs special?
One of Bill Shook’s most important designs is his patented Six Pawl Cam Actuated Engagement System found in our hubs. All six oversized pawls engage in unison whenever drive torque is applied. No other multiple pawl system on the market can ensure that all pawls are engaged at the same time. The cam plate powers the pawls into engagement simultaneously. There are new expanded cupped engagement pockets in the cam plate for improved contact. The secondary ratchet system does the coasting and forces engagement of the large pawls only for drive torque transfer. Each pawl is made from super strong tool steel and has double tips for 12 points of engagement. The cassette body has 24 ratchet teeth for engagement with the pawls. The one-piece forged 7075 aluminum cassette body is hard anodized and is topped with Bill’s latest steel face cassette body design.
Do you make Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo compatible wheels and hubs?
Our road wheels are either Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo group compatible, to be specified when ordering. The Shimano/SRAM 17mm wheels are 8-9-10 speed compatible. Campagnolo 17mm road wheels are 9-10-11 speed compatible. Please note that wheels with the older 15mm Campagnolo wheels are not 11 speed compatible and cannot be retrofitted for campy 11 speed. Our mountain bike wheels are all Shimano/SRAM compatible.
Why did Bill Shook invent the Steel Faced Cassette Body?
There has been a universal problem in the bike industry. Aluminum cassette bodies are damaged by the individual cassette cogs, and from loose fitting shimano brand 10 speed cassettes. Bill Shook found an ingenious solution to this problem with his latest design, the steel faced cassette body. Our new shimano style cassette bodies are now equipped with the steel face on the splines so that the body will not be damaged by the cassette. Each steel insert is dovetailed in place. Steel is harder than aluminum, which protects the softer aluminum from being gouged by the cassette. You get the best of both worlds, a lightweight aluminum body with the protection of a steel surface. The steel faced cassette body will prolong the life of your American Classic hub and make changing cassettes easier. A brilliantly simple solution to an annoying problem. It is Bill Shook’s attention to detail that make American Classic’s wheels better than the rest.
Can I purchase a new Steel Faced Shimano Cassette Body to retrofit my American Classic wheels?
The new AC steel face cassette body is currently available in Shimano/SRAM only for retrofitting your 17mm AC hub only and is currently not available for retrofitting older 15mm AC hubs. It is not available for in Campagnolo and Single Speed body styles. Before you order, please look at the HELP tab on this web site under hub sets to identify your hub and determine if it can be upgraded to the new steel face cassette body. Identification is important to ensure you will receive the correct parts when you order. The cost of a new cassette body is $85.00 US plus shipping and includes as standard equipment 2 new bearings installed inside the body and a cam plate. Always install the new cam plate when you install your new cassette body. You can order a new Shimano/SRAM steel faced cassette body and cam plate through your local American Classic dealer or by calling American Classic.
Why doesn’t the new American Classic Campagnolo cassette body have a Steel Face?
The Campagnolo spline pattern is deep versus the shallow spline pattern that works with Shimano and SRAM. Because the splines are deep, the Campagnolo cassettes do not dig into the cassette bodies and therefore, the steel face is not necessary.
After removing my cassette from my older American Classic hub, I noticed that my cassette body splines are damaged from the individual cogs indenting the splines. Do I need a new cassette body?
Many times you can save your aluminum cassette body by using a file to smooth off the tops of the scuffed splines, making the cassette easier to mount. Before the invention of the steel faced cassette body, we used aluminum free hub bodies on all our wheels. Aluminum is softer than steel and naturally display marks from the splines over time. To limit this from happening, make sure your cassette lock ring is tight and that your cassette is not loose. When loosening the lock ring always place the chain whip on the smallest cog. Failure to do so may result in damaging the cassette body splines, which is not covered by the warranty.
I noticed my Shimano brand 10 speed cassettes are loose on the cassette body and is this normal? Do I need to use the clip/pin kit with my cassette?
Shimano changed the shape of the inside of their 10 speed cassettes by removing contact points causing the cassettes to fit loosely on the cassette body. Before the invention of the steel face cassette body, Bill Shook designed special clips or pins, which reduce the movement in the 10 speed Shimano cassettes and protect the cassette body from being marked and damaged by the movement of the loose 10 speed Shimano brand cassette. The clips/pins are installed under the freestanding cogs. It is important to use these clips/pins in conjunction with the 0.5 mm American Classic cassette spacer provided with wheels and the silver Shimano cassette spacer so that you do not damage your cassette body.
You do not need clips/pins for Shimano 9 speed cassettes, SRAM 9 or 10 speed cassettes or Campagnolo 9, 10 or 11 speed cassettes, or if you have one of AC’s steel face cassette bodies.
The kit contains 3-10 speed Ultegra clips, 3-10 speed Dura Ace clips and 3-10 speed 105 pins. The kits are $14.99 US plus shipping and you can order a kit from your local American Classic dealer or by calling American Classic. Please see the HELP tab on this website for directions on installing the clips or pins in with your Shimano 10 speed cassette.
Do the Clips/Pins work with other maker’s hubs?
Yes, they work with other maker’s hubs.
I have an American Classic road wheel with a Shimano/SRAM cassette body. I am switching to Campagnolo group set and want to know if the cassette bodies are interchangeable? I have an American Classic road wheel with a Campagnolo cassette body. I am switching to a Shimano or SRAM group set and want to know if the cassette bodies are interchangeable?
The cassette bodies are interchangeable. Before you order, please look at the HELP tab on this web site under hub sets to identify your hub and determine if it can be upgraded to the new cassette body. Identification is important to ensure you will receive the correct parts when you order. The cost of a new cassette body is $85.00 US plus shipping and includes as standard equipment 2 new bearings installed inside the body and a cam plate. Always install the new cam plate when you install your new cassette body. The wheel will have to be re-dished by an experienced wheel builder after the body is installed. Please note that wheels with the older 15mm Campagnolo wheels are not 11 speed compatible and cannot be retrofitted for Campy 11 speed. The new AC steel faced cassette body is currently available in Shimano/SRAM only for retrofitting your 17mm AC hub and is currently not available for retrofitting older 15mm AC hubs. You can order a new cassette body and cam plate through your local American Classic dealer or by calling American Classic.
Will an American Classic conversion cassette allow me to ride a Campagnolo 10 speed drive train on a Shimano wheel?
The American Classic conversion cassette is a 10 speed Campagnolo cassette designed to fit a Shimano 9 and 10 speed hub. It does not fit on a Shimano 10 speed only hub. This is an easier fix than installing a new cassette body and cam plate and then re-dishing the wheel. Our conversion cassettes are made specifically designed and manufactured as a conversion cassette and are not chopped and re-spaced cassettes. We offer the following sizes in steel cogs on an alloy carrier: 11-23 or 12-25. They are $105.00 US each and shipping and you can order a conversion cassette from your local American Classic dealer or by calling American Classic.
Do you have any other conversion cassettes available?
No. We do not have other conversions available, such as Campagnolo style wheels to Shimano drive trains.
Do American Classic conversion cassettes work on other brands of hubs?
Our conversion cassettes work on American Classic hubs and other makers Shimano 9 and 10 speed style hubs. It does not work on Shimano 10 speed only hubs. Our conversion cassettes work on PowerTap and Chris King hubs.
Do I need to use the 0.5 mm cassette spacer provided with the wheels before mounting my cassette?
For Shimano 10 speed, you need to use this spacer in conjunction with the Shimano spacer provided with all 10 speed cassettes. The black American Classic 0.5mm cassette spacer goes on first. For Campagnolo 10 and Shimano 9 speed, you only need to use this spacer if the chain touches the spokes when in the easiest gear or once you have tightened the cassette cogs with the lock ring there is still some movement in the cogs.
Do American Classic wheels and hubs come with lock rings?
Our American Classic single speed and track wheels and hubs come with a lock ring. All other American Classic wheels and hubs do not come with a lock ring, so please use the lock rings provided with the cassette you are using. Our hubs fit the Shimano 9-10 speed lock ring and the Campagnolo 10 speed lock ring, respectively. American Classic Campagnolo type cassette bodies take a 27.0 OD size lock ring. Lock rings need to be tight to ensure correct wheel function and to avoid damaging your hub splines. Use a cassette tool and tighten your lock ring.
Where do I place the chain whip on my cassette to loosen my lock ring when removing my cassette?
When loosening the lock ring, always place the chain whip on the smallest cog (for example, the 11 tooth cog on a road bike is the smallest cog). Do not use the chain whip on the center cogs on the cassette. Failure to us the chain whip on the smallest cog may result in damaging the cassette body splines, which is not covered by warranty.
Can Disc 225 hubs be spaced for 130mm road bikes?
No. The spacing for the Disc 225 hubs is 135mm only and cannot be retrofitted or changed to 130mm spacing.
Do American Classic Disc 225 hubs work with Campagnolo?
No, because the Disc 225 hubs cannot be fitted with Campagnolo style cassette bodies. But, the Disc 225 hubs can be used with a conversion cassette with a Campagnolo 10 speed drive train.
Are the track hubs “flip flop” style?
No. The track hubs are a real track hub, meaning they are fixed gear only. They do not “flip flop” from fixed to a coasting system.
Can I ride more than one cog on my single speed disc hub?
You can ride up to 5 gears on our single speed system. If you want to ride multiple gears on our single speed hub, it is important to either install cogs that are pinned together or install individual cogs that have a shoulder like the AC cog provided with the hub. Individual cogs without a shoulder will dig in to your cassette body and damage the splines, which is not covered by warranty.
Can I retrofit my Quick Release Style Front Disc 130 Hub to a 15mm Thru Axle Hub?
There is a 15mm Thru Axle Retrofit Kit available for $35.00US and shipping and you can order the kit from your local American Classic dealer or by calling American Classic. See the HELP tab under hub sets for directions.
Is maintenance really important?
Performance wheels are a big investment. Maintenance is a key factor in prolonging the life of your wheels.
Can I find more information regarding maintenance or repairs?
Please see the HELP tab on this website for information regarding repairs and maintenance. Information on hub bearings and cassette bodies are on the HELP tab under hub sets.
Can I perform small repairs myself?
Many wheel repairs require specialized knowledge, tools, and experience. General mechanical aptitude may not be enough to repair your American Classic wheels. Improper repair may result in accident and injury. It is important to have your American Classic wheels, hubs and components repaired by a professional Bicycle Mechanic, preferable an authorized dealer who has experience with our products. American Classic offers in-house service work provided by our highly qualified Technical Staff and Wheel Builders. Services include wheel rebuilds, hub maintenance, hub cassette body and bearing changes, and general repairs. 90 day guarantee on all work. Call our sales department for estimates on parts and service work. Our sales team will take your order and issue a return authorization (RA) number. Please do not send your wheels in without first obtaining an RA number.
How often do I need to have my wheels serviced?
American Classic recommends a professional bike mechanic perform a service for all wheelsets after the first 100 miles to check spoke tension, bearing and axle adjustment, snugging down lock nuts. Thereafter, every 2000 miles is the recommended service interval for your wheels including truing and re-tensioning, greasing the bearings and cassette body mechanism, inspection for any wheel and tire damage, bearing and axle adjustment, snugging down lock nuts and lock rings etc. We recommend servicing your wheels after you ride in heavy rains, deep water or muddy conditions to keep them in top condition. When cleaning your wheels, avoid pressure spraying water directly at the hub. It is important to inspect and service your wheels and components before putting them away for the winter, and again in the spring before you start riding.
What is the correct spoke tension on my wheels?
It is very important that your wheels are at the correct tension. Over-tensioning or under-tensioning your wheels will interfere with top performance and function, and can lead to hub, spoke and rim damage.
The recommend spoke tension ranges for American Classic Wheels are:
For Alloy and Magnesium wheels: 90-110 kgf (front), 90-120kgf (rear, drive side), as required for dishing (rear, non-drive side).
For Carbons: 80-100 kgf (front), 80-100kgf (rear, drive side), as required for dishing (rear, non-drive side).
See the HELP tab on this web site under wheelsets and spoke charts for details on spoke tension and truing.
What is the purpose of using a “Twist Resist” spoke clamp tool when truing American Classic wheels?
A “Twist Resist” spoke clamp tool holds the spoke during the truing process, which ensures that the spokes do not twist when tightening the spoke nipples. Failure to use this tool leads to the spokes twisting or winding up, which in turn lead to the wheel coming out of true (spokes untwisting) on your first ride. Using this tool is a key in the proper maintenance of your wheels. Please see the HELP tab of this web site under wheel truing for a detailed description and photo of this tool.
What kind of grease do you recommend for wheels?
We recommend synthetic grease. Please avoid white lithium grease. Some good grease manufacturers are Pedro’s, Finish Line, and Dumond Tech.
What type of bearings are in my wheels and hubs?
Our hubs and new wheels come standard with Stainless Steel bearings. Our Stainless Steel fully sealed cartridge bearings have stood the test of time working reliably in our hubs for years. All our bearings have been tested on our wheel testing machines for durability, strength, smoothness, and precision fit in the bearing bores. Bill Shook selected our 440C Stainless Steel bearings to resist moisture, corrosion and abrasion, and for their suitability for high speeds. Some of our new hubs are running 6805 or 6902 Chrome 52100 Steel bearings. Bill Shook analyzed the load capacity and determined these bearings would meet his design goals of strength, performance and durability. The Chrome 52100 Steel bearings are big and made to last. All bearings contain water resistant, corrosion inhibiting grease.
Are 15267 bearings available in Stainless Steel? Is this a custom bearing?
The 15267 bearings are now available in Stainless Steel in the USA. 15267 is a custom bearing size.
I have been told that there should be a small amount of play in my bearings, is this true?
Bill Shook designed adjustable bearings in our hubs so you can dial in your bearings for increased precision. The purpose of adjustability is to extend the life of your bearings, and reduce friction and rolling resistance to boost performance. When your wheel is in the frame and the quick release is tight, there should be a very small amount of side-to-side play when you gently move the tire side to side. This “whisper of play” shows that the bearings are moving freely and correctly.
What are the advantages of going with the Ceramic bearing upgrade?
Ceramic ball bearings have greater hardness than steel ball bearings, resulting in longer ball life. Ceramic balls have a smoother surface finish than steel balls, which means less friction when your wheel is spinning and this translates into increased performance. Ceramic bearings require less lubrication and exhibit less lubrication degeneration, resulting in increased bearing life. Our fully sealed Ceramic cartridge bearings are ABEC-5 and use Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) ceramic balls with 440C stainless steel races. The Ceramic bearings produce an unparalleled ride feel in terms of smoothness, quickness and effortless rolling. All Magnesium wheelsets contain Ceramic Bearings. Ceramic Bearings can be installed in new wheelsets or ordered as kits to retrofit hubs $239.95 US and shipping. The Road Ceramic Bearing Kit contains 2-688 and 4-6803C3 Ceramic Bearings. The MTB Ceramic Bearing Kit contains 6-6803C3 Ceramic Bearings. Look for the yellow seals signifying American Classic’s top quality Ceramic bearings. See the HELP tab on this website under hubsets to determine which front micro or rear cassette hub you have to determine if you can retrofit the hub with Ceramic bearings.
Can the Ceramic bearings be installed in my older AC Road or MTB wheels?
The Ceramic bearings come in two sizes, Ceramic 688 for micro 58 hubs and Ceramic 6803C3 for all 17mm hubs. The Ceramic bearings do not fit in the older style hubs that use R4 bearings or 15267 bearings. See the HELP tab on this website under hubsets to determine which front micro or rear cassette hub you have so that you can order the proper bearings to retrofit the hubs.
If I use Ceramic bearings not sold by American Classic, do I have a warranty for the product?
There are many Ceramic bearings on the market not sold by American Classic. If these bearings do not function properly in your hub or bottom bracket, American Classic cannot warranty the bearing and any damage the non-AC bearings may cause to the American Classic product.
Do I need to check that my quick releases are securely clamped?
Yes. Your American Classic wheels come with quick release hardware and we recommend you check to ensure that your wheel quick releases are securely clamped, each time before you ride your bicycle. Failure to close the quick release properly can result in accident or injury. If you are not sure how to close your quick releases, ask your professional Bicycle Mechanic or Bicycle Shop to assist you so that you know how to install and remove your wheels safely.
My clincher tires are rated up to 180 psi but I noticed on your website that you recommend a maximum inflation of only 120 psi (8 bars), can I still put in 180 psi?
We use lightweight road clincher rims. We recommend not exceeding 120 psi (8 bars) even if the tires have a higher rating. Your risk of tire puncture, tire coming off the rim or rim damage is increased significantly by inflating to extreme pressures over 120psi (8 bars).
I want to ride low tire pressure on my MTB wheels. How low can I go?
We recommend that your tire pressure on MTB wheels does not go below 35 psi (2.5bars) to avoid damaging your rims from bottoming out.
I want to ride my mtb wheels with slicks on the road. What is the maximum inflation for slicks on MTB wheels for use on the road?
120 psi (8 bars) or below if the tire is not rated that high.
Can my valve stem damage my rim if I pull my hand pump off to the side?
Always pull your hand pump or foot pump off gently and directly down, not to the side. Pulling the pump off to the side can damage your rim.
Are the American Classic MTB rims UST rims? Can they be ridden tubeless?
Our rims are clincher style rims. They can be made into a tubeless system with the use of a Stan’s kit for 22mm wide rims. You can use UST tires on our rims with a tube or Stan’s kit.
What brake pads to you recommend for Road and MTB wheels?
Less abrasive brake pads will prolong the life of your wheels. We recommend a soft brake pad compound such as the all weather or wet weather pads made by Kool Stop or Swisstop. There are many other less abrasive brake pads available if you cannot find these pad brands. For carbon wheels, we recommend any type of carbon specific brake pads, also less abrasive to avoid premature wear on the brake surface. We do not recommend the shimano brake pads or other brake pads that come standard on bikes because they can be hard and abrasive. Rim damage from abrasive brake pads is not covered by warranty.
Do I have to change brake pads when I switch from my aluminum to my carbon rims?
We recommend that you change brake pads when you change from aluminum rims to carbon rims, a vice versa. All aluminum rims made by any maker leave small metal flakes in the brake pads over time. If you use the one set of pads on your aluminum and carbon rims, you risk abrading and damaging carbon fiber brake surface from the metal flakes imbedded in the pads. It is a nuisance to change brake pads, but your efforts will protect the investment you made in your wheels.
How do I adjust my brake pads? Should my brake pads touch my rim decals or tire?
Adjust your brake pads with the wheel in the frame with quick release closed. Your brake pads should not touch your rim decals or tire because this can lead to an accident or injury. Please make sure to have a professional Bicycle Mechanic assist you with this installation if necessary.
Why is rim strip or rim tape width and installation important?
Rim tape or rim strips can be too thick, too wide, the tape ends can overlap leaving a bump, or it can be incorrectly installed and curl up the sides. Any or all of these factors may cause the tire to come off the rim or a tire puncture, which may lead to an accident or injury. Please make sure to have a professional Bicycle Mechanic assist you with this installation if necessary. Recommended rim strip width for each American Classic wheelset is on the HELP tab under wheelsets on this web site.
I have been in a minor accident and my wheels seem to be fine. Are they okay to ride?
You should have a professional Bicycle Mechanic check them over to make sure there is not damage that may not be at first obvious. This includes accidents like falls, slamming your wheels in a car door, hitting potholes or other objects, or running your bike into the garage roof on the car rack, etc.
Why doesn’t American Classic sell individual rims?
We are often asked this question. Our rims are lightweight and can be difficult to build. We handle all wheel rebuilds in-house because our experienced wheel builders maintain our quality standards. Sorry, we do not make exceptions to this rule.
Does American Classic have a new wheel crash replacement plan?

2.0 Magnesium Wheels
Why is American Classic innovating Magnesium rims?
It’s about the rims. Lighter rims means reduced rotational weight resulting in overall higher performance for the cyclist. Bike companies constantly strive to reduce rim weight, a feat difficult to achieve because there must be a balance between lightness and strength. With the use of engineering, research, testing and creativity, Bill Shook, American Classic’s engineer and company president, successfully brought the lightest aluminum clincher rims to the marketplace. Always forging ahead with new ideas, Bill is making strides with magnesium as a new rim material. Magnesium is treasured in the automotive and aerospace industries for its lightness, strength and ductility. Magnesium is lighter than aluminum and withstands impact damage better than carbon fiber. Companies have tried to use magnesium for bicycle applications but could not figure out how to work with the material. After studying the metallurgy of magnesium and using his engineering know-how, Bill successfully developed the bending technology to create the Mag rims. The result is 280 gram rims that are stiff, strong, accelerate quickly, corner hard and naturally dampen high frequency road vibration for a smooth ride.
Are the Magnesium wheels available in clincher and tubular?
The Mags now come in both clincher and tubular models.
What is new about the Magnesium wheels?
The 2009 Mag’s have several improvements and new features. Through product development, Bill Shook was able to design brake tracks into the Mag rims. Although brake tracks are not a new idea, Magnesium is a new unique material for making rims and each advance is a design breakthrough for the material. Further, the 2009 Mags have a wider rim profile for added stiffness and stability. The Mag rims are specially coated to prevent corrosion. All 2009 Mags come standard with AC ceramic bearings, titanium quick release skewers and wheel bags.
Do I need special brake pads with the Magnesium wheels?
We recommend Kool Stop salmon color all weather brake pads and these come standard with the new Mag wheels. These pads are less abrasive brake pads will prolong the life of your wheels.
Are the Magnesium wheels durable? Do they require special care?
Mag rims have proved to be durable. Mag wheels do not require much special care. They do require regular maintenance and service, like any American Classic wheel, to keep them in top working order. Our only special suggestions are regarding salt and cleaners. Salt can be the most corrosive factor on the Mag rims and we recommend wiping them off with a towel after rainy or wet rides or rides at the beach or salty terrain. Also, if you decide to clean your Mag rims, wash them in mild dish soap such as Ivory liquid and water, rather than using harsh cleaners containing ammonium or caustics.
